“After completing the Certificate IV in Massage Therapy, my goal was to be just a Massage Therapist and develop my expertise in relaxation massage modalities. What I found was that my opportunities to get jobs in the industry were severely limited mainly due to the lack of Health Provider coverage with that qualification.
I enrolled to do the Diploma solely for the purpose of getting the Health Provider coverage. As I began to learn more and more about the Remedial side of Massage Therapy I realised that having the depth of knowledge gained was far more valuable than I had perceived.
Not only have my opportunities been expanded but my knowledge has added a great deal to my treatments and care of clients, where basic massage could never have given me but I can still do Relaxation Massage as well. I now have the job of my dreams working aboard cruise ships with Steiner, I am literally massaging my way around the world and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the team at Q Academy.
After spending some time working on a Cruise ship and seeing the sort of people doing massage (Beauty Therapists, Fitness people, Physios), everyone should know that the skills being taught at the College are invaluable. The POMS keep telling me that they cannot find my sort of skills anywhere...and so if anyone is thinking about working overseas, DO IT...you will make a fortune...

My time at Q Academy would rate as one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. Even though I was not sure of the path I was looking to take at my mature age (48) the initial meeting over the phone with the staff made my decision easy with the enthusiasm and professional way they handled my myriad of questions and doubts. They made me believe that I was capable of what they expected at the college and kept their promise through the whole 6 months I was there that I would be helped and guided through whatever hurdles I may come across, especially being a mature age student who had not been to school for a long time.
Having to move to the Gold Coast to attend the course and being away from home for 6 months was difficult but I was never left feeling alone or unloved and I remember a lot of laughs and fun times during class and out of class and through all our hard work and study.
It was a sad time leaving my class, and tutors who I relied heavily on for guidance. Coming home with my Diploma was daunting as I realized all they had taught me was now becoming a reality.....one of the best pieces of advice I remember hearing from one of my Tutors was “a client will always respect a therapist that goes to their books when they are not sure of the answer to a problem”.
I have my own clinic now 12 months on and my study books and notes are on my desk at all times. I have never stopped learning and I still recall the jingles and hints we were taught to help us study and remember things (like boney landmarks and golgi tendons) and have a bit of a giggle at some of my notes on the hard days when I thought I just wasn’t getting it. I did get it though because they were there to make sure I did. I am now enjoying the fruits of my hard work and Q Academy’s dedication and support in helping me achieve my diploma.
A great motivation for therapists like myself who are working on their own (and a long way from the College) is knowing there is ongoing support if you need it. I still keep in contact with the college and they are always happy to talk to me and are still there to give help or advice.
I cannot fault the expertise and knowledge the college passed on to students whether just going into the industry as an employee or setting up a business module to go out on your own. Their advice and information was invaluable and was instrumental in helping me achieve the goal of setting up my own clinic.

I needed to work with people doing something that makes them feel better. Needed to have fun. Needed a path opening up to new horizons. Perhaps something really hands-on as a contrast to various seriously sedentary jobs of the last twenty years or so?
No doubt about it, the Q A information pack attracted me on all levels. All I needed was to invest my superannuation - in Me!
Why Q Academy?
The pictures in the brochure hit me - you can't fake enjoyment and enthusiasm. And a visit to the college decided me: Committed people in charge, with professional attitudes, and most importantly I could feel the enthusiasm for massage.
I did compare QA briefly with other institutions offering massage courses. But QA offered the most, was most up-to-date in its adoption of effective learning principles: keeping active; having fun; being creative, even outrageous at times; working in small groups. The whole effect was that whatever it took to get the information across was On. Drawing on bodies? - of course!
In addition, there were attractive conditions: You could keep coming back if you missed part of the course or needed more time to complete it to the required standard; The course was full-time and accelerated - highly desirable to me; the all-in cost including all kinds of freebies, not the least being a massage table, First Aid courses and annual updates.
What I found
The course was as anticipated from the pictures - all that and more. The subject matter was well organised and presented. My knowledge of, and respect for, the human body has grown enormously. I have to admit that at times the sheer volume of learning was a challenge for me, but I was not alone. We all had to cope with it in our own ways. But we were encouraged to, and did, access help from the staff as required. I tested the patience of the coaches unmercifully by my questions. Perhaps for people like me understanding has to be the key. Let there be no doubt about it, the commitment and unwavering enthusiasm of the coaches for what they were teaching was essential to our success.
And, also importantly, there appears to be a core value of the management of the Academy: ask for feedback, take stock of what is happening. and aim for improvement. That must be a winning attitude.
What next for me?
There seem to be a number of options for me: Working part-time from home is certainly one but first I need to build up a reputation. So I may try for mobile massage work in a retirement estate. Or find a clinic where they have work for a massage-therapist like me. I have to admit I feel past working with athletes, in a beauty clinic, or on cruise ship - but you never know!

I undertook study in Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice and Diploma of Remedial Massage Therapy in 2009.
My interest initially was the treatment of sport injuries with the intention of opening my own clinic and mobile business on the Gold Coast to undertake this and general massage therapy.
I had come from a background that had no real involvement in this area and therefore had little knowledge of the workings of the human body and basic human anatomy. I knew that it was going to be a personal challenge to handle the demands of what the Academy may present to me and ultimately to get to the graduation point. These concerns were quickly allayed as the tutors at Q Academy made the whole class immediately at ease and with their many and varied methods of instruction and teaching made the journey to attaining the Diploma a pleasurable experience and one that gave me confidence in retaining the knowledge and entering into the profession and to be a professional.
The transition to employment after graduation is a daunting one and after a short period of working with an organisation in a ‘Spa’ environment I set up my own business which again is a huge challenge. The transition involves research and done at a steady and cautious speed however, the thing that made it that much easier was that even though ‘the setting up of a business’ is a module of your study it is hugely supplemented by the experienced Q Academy tutors and staff who were always willing to listen and give advice not only on the pitfalls of the Massage business but also the best ways to start up, market and run your own business. It is a real comfort that this information and advice is not one-off but ongoing to all past students of Q Academy.

Sam McBean - Remedial Therapist: owner Marooka Massage
Prior to starting the course I was working in marketing and sales. I wanted to get into massage as I had previously studied human movement. I’m a keen sporting person and was interested in getting into the health and fitness industry - however in something a little more interesting where I could help people.
When I was looking for a college, it was important for me that I would enjoy the training and that it was professional. It had to be science based and of a comprehensive depth, I didn’t want an airy fairy course. It was also important that it have full time hours as I wanted to make the career change quickly. The main thing that interested me with Q Academy was student for life and interactive learning techniques.
My initial goal was to setup a business in my local suburb. I now work 2 blocks from where I live. This course gave the power and choices to setup where I wanted. I intended on setting up by myself and building a client base before expanding my clinic further to employ another person. That has now grown to employing a 2nd person, an acupuncturist who is a yoga therapist. I also have plans to setup a gym within my clinic for muscle strengthening and reconditioning exercises for my clients.
Ever since doing the course and achieving my dream job everything has gone great and is just falling into place.
